How to Learn The Past Tense in Spanish – Learning The Spanish Preterit Tense

If you want to learn the past tense in Spanish or if you want to learn the Spanish preterit tense, this is a lesson that you must read. The Past Tense that is called: Pretérito Indefinido or Pretérito Perfecto Simple (PPS), is a tense used to tell things that have happened once or when they indicate time duration.

Example:
– Anoche fui al cine (Yesterday I went to the cinema)
– Viví en París por 7 años. (I lived in Paris for 7 years)

We usually use the next phrases with PPS:
• Anoche (Last night)
• Ayer (Yesterday)
• Anteayer (the day before yesterday)
• La semana pasada (The last week)
• El fin de semana pasado (The last weekend)
• El … (day: monday) …. pasado (The last "Monday")
• Hace …. (time: 3 meses) (Three months ago)
• El año pasado (Last Year)

4 important Irregular verbs in PPS are:

IR / SER: Fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fueron
ESTAR: Estuve, estuviste, estuvo, estuvimos, estuvieron
HACER: Hice, hiciste, hizo, hicimos, hicieron.

Note: There are more Irregular verbs in this tense that we will study in the next lesson.
The endings of Regular Verbs are:

Cantar: Yo canté, Tú cantaste, ÉL / Ella / Ud. cantó, Nosotros cantamos, Uds./Ellos/Ellas cantaron, Vosotros cantasteis.
Comer: Yo comí, Tú comiste, Ud./Él/Ella comió, Nosotros comimos, Uds./Ellos/Ellas comieron, Vosotros comisteis.
Vivir: Yo viví, Tú viviste, Ud./Él/Ella vivió, Nosotros vivimos, Uds./Ellos/Ellas vivieron, Vosotros vivisteis.

– Qu Qué hiciste anoche? What did you do last night?
– Anoche fui al cine con Oscar. Last night I went to the cinema with Oscar
– Qu Qué película miraron? What film did you watch?
– Miramos "Inception"; después fuimos a cenar a "La Farola". Qu Qué hiciste tú? We watched "Inception"; after that we went to eat the dinner at "La Farola". What did you do?
– Salí con amigos del gimnasio. Fuimos a bailar. Estuvo muy divertida la noche. I went out with friends from the gym. We went to dance. The night was very fun.

We usually use this tense to write biographies, because we have to use specific dates. Example (the translations appear below):

Eva Perón nació el 7 de mayo de 1919 en Los Toldos, provincial de Buenos Aires.
Llegó a Buenos Aires en 1935, donde actó para diversas compañías de teatro, fue modelo y comenzó a hacerse famosa trabajando en radioteatros.
En 1944 conoció a Juan D. Perón en el Luna Park, en medio de un evento solidario.
Apoyó el voto femenino, que se convirtió en Ley en Septiembre de 1947.
En julio de 1948 creó la Fundación Eva Perón que desarrolló tareas de asistencia social para los más pobres.
Murió en 1952, con 33 años de edad.

Eva Peron was born on May 7, 1919 in Los Toldos, in the Province of Buenos Aires.
She arrived in Buenos Aires in 1935, where she worked for various theater companies, was a model and became famous working in theater for radio.
In 1944 she met Juan D. Peron in Luna Park, in the mid of a charity event.
She supported women's suffrage, which became a law in September 1947.
In July 1948, she created the Eva Peron Foundation which developed social welfare work for the poor.
She died in 1952, with 33 years of age.
